Bee Ridgway Interviewed in USA Today

Bryn Mawr Professor of English Bethany Schneider (a.k.a. Bee Ridgway) discussed the blending of genres in her new novel, The River of No Return, in a recent interview on the USA Today website.

Schneider’s love of Regency romance novels fuels her narrative, but she says she consciously jostled the confines of several defined genres during the process of writing the novel.

“….when I sat down to write a novel that blended a bunch of different genre codes, I found that I had to make one genre the boss of the others. One genre to rule them all, one genre to bind them. I chose Regency romance because I enjoy it, because I find its limitations interesting, and because it is a fundamentally happy genre. It has quite a bit of the picaresque in it, a lot of comedy, a lot of absurdity—and I wanted my novel to have humor and lightness of step. But I wanted to make Regency romance play with some other, less-sparkly genres. I wanted to see how far I could stretch that genre without breaking it.”

The River of No Return is available now.
