rachel_heiserLast fall, Bryn Mawr College welcomed Rachel Heiser into the newly created position of Academic Support and Learning Resources Specialist in the Undergraduate Dean’s Office. Since joining the Bryn Mawr community, Heiser has engaged with students, faculty, and staff to provide dynamic support to the Undergraduate College.

Heiser has been helping administrators create and enhance support structures for students as well as working face-to-face with students themselves. She hosts weekly “Academic Success” coffee chats and biweekly “Senior Success” coffee chats—informal, drop-in events held in Guild. She also heads the peer-tutor and peer-mentor programs and advises students on an individual basis.

“Because I’m here and I can meet with people one-on-one, it allows us to really assess a student’s specific needs,” she says. “We talk about things that affect students in their college experience, so not just academics and study skills, but time management, learning to assess motivation, setting goals, and stress management.”

“Rachel has been a tremendous asset,” says Dean of the Undergraduate College Michele Rasmussen. “Bryn Mawr has always done a good job of offering students academic support; now we’ve enhanced that support by putting into place someone whose sole responsibility is to help coordinate all the various programs available to best meet a student’s particular individual needs.”

Heiser is also a member of the Student Support Council working closely with members of Bryn Mawr faculty and staff to determine how the administration can more effectively reach out to students.

“It’s exciting to really get a feel for the school and the passion of the people who work here and the students. The atmosphere is phenomenal,” she says. “Bryn Mawr students really do lead the way for what they want their education to be. I’ve never worked at a school where students have so much say and are so empowered.”

Heiser encourages students to stop by an Academic Success coffee chat, on Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the Guild Conference Room, or to attend one of the bi-weekly Senior Success chats on Wednesdays from 11 to noon. A list of dates and topics for each chat can be found online:

Students may also make individual appointments with Heiser by calling the Dean’s Office at x5375 or by coming to her walk-in hours from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

Heiser is also available for presentations to classes or groups on academic success. Faculty, staff, and students who wish to find out more about the services provided can reach her via email at rheiser[at]brynmawr.edu.
