Bryn Mawr in the Media: Boardwalk Empire, The Office

The first week of December brought talk of Bryn Mawr to the viewers of at least two high-profile TV series.

  • On the Dec. 4 episode of Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s highly acclaimed gangster drama about Prohibition-era Atlantic City, racketeer Jimmy Darmody, in a flashback to his days as a student at Princeton, uses the College (or perhaps the town) as a reference when assessing a woman’s self-presentation. At a Princeton mixer, Angela, the Italian-American waitress who will eventually become Jimmy’s wife, asks him how she looks. “Like you came from Bryn Mawr,” he responds. We are interpreting that as a compliment.
  • On the Dec. 8 episode of the popular NBC mockumentary comedy series The Office, Andy introduces his new girlfriend as the assistant cross-country coach at Bryn Mawr (see video embedded below). The Bryn Mawr cross-country team’s real assistant coach, 2005 Haverford graduate Rachel Sandler, is both better-looking and faster than the actress impersonating her on The Office, Rachel’s mom assures us.
