Family Weekend Celebrates Bryn Mawr’s 125th, Athletic Association’s 120th

From Friday, Nov. 5, to Sunday, Nov. 7, Bryn Mawr will host almost 525 members of students’ families at Family Weekend 2010. The three-day event will feature activities all over campus led by faculty, staff, and students.

The visitors will attend lectures by faculty and staff, receive tours of the campus and of Philadelphia, and participate in discussions about college life with topics ranging from how to choose a major to planning for professional school.

“This year we are very excited on two levels,” says Lisa Zernicke of the Conferences and Events Office, who oversees the programming for the weekend. “First, we’re honored to have Jane Golden of the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia coming to speak about the 125th-anniversary mural, which families will have a chance to contribute to.

“Second, we look forward to the many Athletics events planned for this weekend in conjunction with the rededication of the gym-rededication ceremony,” Zernicke continued. The newly renovated Bern Schwartz Fitness and Athletics Center will be on display this weekend as the College celebrates the 120th anniversary of the Bryn Mawr College Athletic Association, the oldest in the country.

Entertainment by Students
Evening entertainment over the weekend will be provided by students.”We are looking forward to showcasing a variety of student arts including performances by Shakespeare Performance Troupe and an open mike hosted by Nimbus literary arts magazine,” says Zernicke.

Other student performers include campus a cappella groups, the Haverford/Bryn Mawr Chamber Singers and Orchestra, and the Renaissance Choir.

Celebrating the College’s 125th with History and Art
Families are invited to participate in a number of 125th-annniversary celebrations over the weekend. On Saturday morning, Chief Information Officer and Director of Libraries Elliott Shore, who is also a professor of history, will present “Making History Since 1885,” a short lecture on the history of the College featuring rare photographs that will be published for the first time in December in a book celebrating the first 125 years of Bryn Mawr.

Families will also have a chance to contribute to the 125th Anniversary Mural that will adorn the Philadelphia District Health Center in West Philadelphia. Painting will take place Saturday afternoon in Rhoads Hall, where the images will be painted on parachute cloth that will then be installed at the mural site.

Athletic Alumnae Join the Festivities
The Athletics and Physical Education Department will be especially visible this Family Weekend. Groups will be touring the renovated gym facilities as part of the Bern Schwartz Fitness and Athletic Center rededication ceremony on Saturday. More than 200 people have sent RSVPs for the ceremony, says Director of Athletics and Physical Education Kathleen Tierney.

An alumnae athlete barbecue will be a highlight of the day. “We’d like to begin a tradition of having athletic alums return to Bryn Mawr,” Kathleen Tierney, “and so far, we are really excited about the response.” In Saturday’s Alumnae Games, approximately 75 alumnae will participate in soccer, field hockey, and basketball games with current Bryn Mawr student-athletes. The BMC Cross Country Team is hosting the First Annual Campus Fun Run, a 3K run with alumnae, faculty, staff

A full listing of the program of events for Family Weekend can be found on the Family Weekend website maintained by Conferences and Events.
