This Boston Globe article tells the inspiring story of sisters Laila and Jaila Abdul Nabi, who recently graduated from high school less than six years after walking into their first classroom. Laila will be attending Bryn Mawr this fall.

The girls and their mother fled Afghanistan for Pakistan after a Taliban bomb killed their father. In 2004, at ages 13 and 14, the girls and their mother arrived in Boston thanks to UNICEF program. It marked the first time the girls were able to attend school.

“They threw themselves into their studies, staying up till 3 a.m. some nights, pushing and coaching each other, trying to make up eight missed years,” writes Globe columnist Yvonne Abraham.
