“After a nationwide search in which we met with many truly outstanding candidates, we decided that Laurie’s creativity, professional experience, grasp of the admission and recruitment landscape, and appreciation of Bryn Mawr’s distinctive mission made her the ideal choice,” said Rickard.

Koehler has been director of admission at Miami University since March of 2007. Under her leadership Miami has enrolled the most racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse class in its 200-year history.

“As the dean of admissions I plan to take every action with a commitment to three guiding principles: excellence, access, and diversity,” said Koehler. “Higher education has the ability to profoundly transform individuals, entire families, and communities, and I am proud to be joining a college community that holds similar beliefs, and that recruits and enrolls outstanding students who aspire to make a meaningful contribution to the world.”

During her time at Miami, Koehler also led a restructuring of the admission organization, better aligning positions, people, and resources with office and university goals. She increased opportunities for professional development by members of the admission staff and introduced a more strategic approach to Miami’s enrollment efforts, ensuring that operational decisions were based on the best available research and data.

“Laurie’s experience will be a tremendous asset as Bryn Mawr continues to transition to a more consolidated student-services structure that will allow the College to be even more responsive to our undergraduate and graduate students’ needs,” said Rickard.

Prior to going to Miami, Koehler was the senior associate director for recruitment at Cornell University and an assistant dean of admissions at the University of Virginia. She received both a bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and communication studies and a master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia.

She serves on the Common Application board of directors and is a member of the Association of Chief Admission Officers at Public Universities, the National Association for College Admission Counseling, and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

Koehler will be replacing Chuck Rickard, who was brought to Bryn Mawr last summer as interim dean of admissions while the search for a permanent dean took place. Rickard was recruited for the job after having retired in 2007 after more than 30 years of senior-level admissions experience, most recently as Associate Vice President for Enrollment Services at Kent State.

The search for a new dean of admissions was conducted with the assistance of Lahti Search Consultants. In addition to Jenny Rickard, the search committee was made up of Professor and Dean of the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Darlyne Bailey, Physics Professor Peter Beckmann, Director of Creative Writing Program and Associate Professor Karl Kirchwey, students Allison Elkin ’10 and Joo Park ’11, Assistant Dean of the Undergraduate College Michelle Mancini, Chief Financial Officer John Griffith, and trustees William Rankin and Vicki Weber.
